Clam Glam is a Shore Thing: 100 Days of Painting on Seashells

All Days | Day by Day | Author Login

Adopt-a-Shell: Give a Former Tiny House, a New Home. Each of these seashells was once home to a little creature, on the shores of, or on the bottom of local coastal waters. Now each of them has been given a fresh coat of interior decoration, with their outsides left mostly untouched, showing the story and beauty of where they have been. If you would like to give one a loving home, or if you know someone who would be thrilled to have them, please: click on your favourite shells and find out their story and adoption details. Proceed portions go to marine education, conservation and research. Postage is free. (Sometimes a few requests for the same shell are received, so I will request payment only from the person who 'got' the shell. Thank you xo)

Day 63 A Consortium of Crabs

63/100 (NZD 31) A consortium of crabs. (Aka a cast of crabs ) These are king crabs found in the deep cold waters of Antarctica. I found the shell had some nice white colourings and textures to be used as the icy backdrop to today's piece. There was a big hoohah in 2011 about how the king crabs have invaded Antarctica due to the waters warming up. By 2013, it was found that perhaps these king crabs were native and had been there all along. Griffiths highlighted that we know very little about the ecology of Antarctica, which is making it tricky to understand the changes occurring under increasing temperatures. 'The irony of Griffith's discovery is that, instead of king crabs being the most threatening species in Antarctica, they may be the most threatened.'
